What if I'm the last one to get my period?!

I’m in the 5th grade and about eight girls in my class already have their periods. I didn’t even know it was possible to get it in 5th grade. One person even got it in 4th. Now I’m afraid I’m gonna be weird and get it in high school. I’m afraid to talk about this stuff with my mom and my sister, who’s in 8th grade and really could care less. I need someone to talk to other than my friends.

Every girl gets her period at a different time—it has to do with how quickly your bod matures. You shouldn’t be worried about not getting your period yet, ‘cause you have plenty of time for it to come! It isn’t weird to get it in fifth grade, and it isn’t weird to get it in high school…it’s completely different for everyone.

It may seem intimidating to bring up such a personal subject with your mom or big sis, but that’s exactly why they’re there. They’ve both been through the same situation you’re in now, which makes them totally great to talk to! Another great thing about talking to your mom is that sometimes girls get their periods around the same age their moms got theirs. This means that by finding out when your mom started getting her period, you can get a ballpark idea of when yours might start!

Periods are an uncomfortable topic for some girls, but they don’t have to be for you. If you start talking to your mom about it now, when it does arrive you’ll feel a lot better telling her and asking for help to handle it.
