Guilty About My Good Life

I feel really guilty about my lifestyle. Even though it’s not perfect at all, it is much better than a kid in China that has no food. Or even men and women in the military. Whenever I get something out shopping I feel really guilty like it could have gone to someone who really needs it.

Also my dad passed away three months ago and I am a teenage girl with raging hormones. So whenever I get mad at my mom or argue with her I feel super guilty. Please help me!

Aw, hon, I’m totally sorry to hear about your dad. Losing someone you love is probably the hardest thing in the world to experience. But you should know you’re not alone. There are support groups, counseling if you need it, or maybe you just need a good chat with a close friend. Or you can talk about it here at Girlslife.com, where there are tons of girls willing to listen. Just remember, you don't have to go through this alone.

As far as the hormones go, welcome to puberty, lovely, huh? What you’re going through is normal. Every teenage girl has some issues with her mom every now and then. I know I have! When I was 13, I would argue a lot with my mom and I’d feel really guilty about it, too. Who wouldn’t?

But you only have one mom and even though you will argue (nobody’s family or relationship with her mother is absolutely perfect), as long as you apologize and tell her how much she really does mean to you, everything will be okay. Your mom loves you and I know you love her, too, and now, more than ever, you need each other. So no, your relationship will not be perfect, but it will be real, honest and loving.

When you say you feel guilty about your lifestyle, don’t worry. I’m an adult and I still feel that way sometimes. I mean, my house isn’t huge and I don’t drive a Mercedes, but I went to a good school and I have a great family. That’s nothing to feel guilty about and you shouldn’t feel bummed about it either.

When you start to feel guilty, try doing something positive that will make you feel better. Volunteer to help teach younger children how to read. Offer to plant a garden for your elderly neighbor. Clean up the trash in your neighborhood. Donate your old clothes to a local charity. Give canned goods to a food drive. I find that when I do something to help others, I feel better about myself and I’m sure you will, too. So get out there and find something you love. Pretty soon, you’ll feel happy, not guilty. Good luck, hon!

Lots of love,
L’Oreal
