Erasing Rumors

Something really weird is happening at my school. My friends are all getting mad at me because they think I have been talking about them behind their backs, but I haven’t! One of my friends thinks I called her stupid, but I was just joking around and seriously didn't mean it.

They told everyone else that I wasn't kidding and now she thinks that I called her stupid behind her back another time. Other friends have heard other stuff too, and I have no idea who started it. So many people have heard this and that that they are starting to believe it. Everyone has heard I have made fun of them, so people are so mad. What should I do?

Hey Love,

You definitely have to do some damage control. Even though you shouldn’t have called your friend stupid (jokingly or otherwise) clearly some feelings are hurt here and you need to patch things up. The first thing you need to do is to apologize to the friend who DID say something. Let it settle in and then I would confront her about the fact that she skewed the story when she told other people and took everything out of context, which made you look unkind. I think a lot of what’s going on right now is stemming from this one incident.

The best thing you can do to protect your rep is to take a breather from making comments, no matter how silly they are. Some girls just can’t take jokes or make light of things and you don’t want a situation like this happening again. Just reassure your friends that you would never say anything hurtful behind their backs and wait it out. Whatever you do, don’t get angry and start whining about the situation. This could lead to deeper issues and continue the feud. It's easy to say things you will regret when you are upset, don’t fall into this trap.

XOXO,
Jana
