GL's going quiet for the Day of Silence. Are you?

Today is the National Day of Silence. Girls' Life will be joining thousands of schools, organizations and individuals across the country to call attention to the continual silence forced upon LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people. For longer than we can remember, those society considers to be different have been shut out, mocked, bullied, discriminated against, minimized and marginalized. In a word, silenced. But no longer. We're taking a stand. How, you ask? We're going dark.

You'll be able to find the posts you love on girlslife.com, but GL is staying off social media on April 19 to join the fight--and we hope you will, too. Here's how:
1. Zip those lips for 24 hours. Though your teachers can require you to speak during class, keeping quiet in homeroom, the hallway and during after school activities--and bearing a sign that explains your activism--will spread the message and encourage your peers to broaden their minds and perhaps even join in.
2. Post a Selfie for Silence. Snap a picture of yourself holding up the Day of Silence sign (download it here) with the reason you're keeping quiet today. Then, post it on Facebook here or tweet it using #DayofSilence.
3. Change your profile and cover images. Get creative, or use the ones available on dayofsilence.org.
4. Share the mission, then keep your fingers--and your every thought or picture--to yourself. That's right, close out of your social media accounts for the day and make your silence digital.
Ready to get quiet? Register your activism here and help us make today's silence the loudest one ever.
