Why being single really is the best thing ever

It’s the question I’ve gotten all my life: Why are you still single? OK, I get it. No, I don’t have a hunchback. Yes, I can form complete sentences (most of the time). And, yes, on occasion, I’ve been known to have a small amount of charm, an ounce of wit, and, don’t mean to brag, I do make killer fried chicken.

Of course, anyone who asks that question most likely isn’t doing it out of concern, but more so to figure out what, exactly, is wrong with me. Well, on behalf of me and every other girl without a BF, allow me to offer one simple answer: Nothing.

I’m certainly not here to tell you that having a boyfriend isn’t awesome, because it can be. But it has to be the right boyfriend. And, all too often, girls go for any boyfriend, just because they don’t want to fly solo on Saturday night.

What many of us don’t realize about being single, though, is that it gives you time to get to know yourself—and what you care about. Sure, you may not have a guaranteed date to the dance, but you do have the opportunity to focus simply on you—and not pleasing someone else (or spending time going to his basketball games or hanging out with his friends).

My sophomore and junior year of high school, I dated Peter Groustra, one of the most amazing guys you’d ever want to meet. He was also, tear, a year older than me.

Long story short, I was left suddenly boyfriend-less during senior year. That year, I also started my own catering company, interned at a local magazine, produced a TV commercial, won a contest to DJ a radio show and got my best GPA ever. Just sayin’.

The right guy will always encourage you to follow your dreams, pursue your passions and open up your world in ways you never thought possible. But what I’ve learned in all my years of being single is that you need to do that for yourself first.
