Why is my period so heavy?

I got my period a week ago and went through one pad every two hours. I only weigh like 100 pounds, and I thought how heavy it was kind of had to do with your weight. It also lasted about nine days. Is this normal, or is it just because it’s my first one?

You’re right, babe. Often weight can be a factor when it comes to how heavy and how long your periods are. Underweight and overweight girls are prone to hormonal imbalances that can cause such irregular periods, so you might want to head to your doc if this becomes a pattern.

A long, heavy period that tends to be irregular is pretty typical for the first few years you menstruate. Your first period can be kind of wacky, so you probably don't have to worry.

This being said, you should chat with your doc next time you visit his/her office. Keep a journal of your periods, noting start and end dates as well as the frequency of pad changing and other things, like heavy cramping or severe mood swings. Regardless of whether or not what you are experiencing is typical, a doc can make sure everything is running smoothly and make you more comfortable with what is happening with your bod. It is also a good idea to have a sit down with your mom, grandmother, or other female family member to talk this out.
