The Hair Secrets I Learned at GL's Latest Photo Shoot

Hi girls! I’m Katie, an intern here at Girls’ Life.  Earlier this week, the GL team was taking pics for the October/November issue, and I got to tag along! It was sooo busy but when I had a minute to breathe, I took a seat in Nicholas Molina’s chair (he’s the celeb stylist we had on set). He gave me some killer tips I had to pass along to you girlies.

My hair is wavy and little longer than my shoulders, but I felt like I was in a total hair rut. Nicholas taught me that I could totally re-do my ‘do in my own bathroom—without cutting it.

EMBRACE MY WAVES
Nicholas explained that I needed to embrace my natural texture. So, I guess that means I shouldn’t straighten my strands everyday? Not only does straightening damage your hair, but also totally defeats the purpose of having curls! Now, I not straightening my hair 24/7, and I’m also using products to bring out the curls, making them last all day in the humid air. Curl crème is my new BFF.

PARTING WAYS

I have always parted my hair to the right side, to give my hair more volume…or so I thought. This was maybe the first thing that Nicholas noticed. I freaked out when he went to switch it to a center part. He kept saying, “Your part isn’t permanent!” By parting my hair down the middle, it gave me an entire new look, and also brought out my eyes. It’s a little thing, but it made a big diff.

NEW UP-DO
Don’t be afraid to experiment with your locks. Usually, I throw my hair up in a messy bun or maybe a loose ponytail. Before I knew it, Nicholas had pinned my hair up into a simple French twist, with a middle part. It was super-cute. Try some new twists or braids that get your hair up and out of your face, which is perfect in this summer heat.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME
My mane is always falling flat. Nicholas gave me a quick fix (don’t worry...there’s no “Bump It” needed). Grab a section of your hair right at the crown of your head. Spritz on some hair spray, and then quickly tease your hair. You’ll get a quick boost and it takes zero time.

And finally…

DON’T TOWEL DRY
I rarely blow-dry my tresses because it takes forever. I usually hop out of the shower, wrap my hair in a towel, and throw it up on top of my head. Apparently, this is the worst thing you can do for your hair! Vigorously rubbing your hair ruins the cuticles. Instead, pat the water from your hair by placing the towel on either side of your wet hair, and gently drying. No rubbing or tugging, but just simple patting.

Ten minutes later and I have a whole new routine. Thanks, Nicholas!
