If your closet is full of old T-shirts, hoodies and sweatpants you haven’t touched in months, don’t throw them out just yet. Tie-dye is one of the easiest ways to give basic clothes a total glow-up without spending a ton of money. It’s creative, fun and somehow makes every piece feel completely one-of-a-kind. Plus, there’s something weirdly satisfying about turning an old white tee into something you actually want to wear again.

First, Pick Your Pieces

The best items for tie-dye are usually cotton fabrics, especially white or light-colored clothes, because the colors show up brighter. Oversized hoodies, sweatpants and vintage tees work especially well if you’re going for that effortlessly cool vintage look. Tie-dye also hides stains and discoloration surprisingly well, which means that the shirt you thought was ruined might *actually* become your new favorite thing.

Before you start, gather everything you’ll need: a tie-dye kit or fabric dye, rubber bands, plastic gloves, squeeze bottles (if your kit doesn’t include them), plastic tablecloths, trash bags or newspaper and a Ziploc bags or plastic wrap. Trust us, the setup matters. Dye stains fast.

Time To Get Messy

Before adding color, dampen your clothes with water so the dye spreads more evenly through the fabric. Then set everything up outside or somewhere that can get messy, like a garage or kitchen counter covered in plastic. (Pro tip: Tie-dye has a way of getting everywhere, so wearing old clothes is definitely recommended.) Gloves are also a must…unless you want rainbow-colored hands for the next three days.

Next comes the actual tying part. Rubber bands help keep sections of fabric separate so the dye creates patterns instead of blending into one muddy color. The tighter the rubber bands are, the more white space you’ll see in the final design. If you want the classic spiral look, pinch the center of the shirt and twist it into a swirl before securing it with rubber bands across the fabric. Crumpling the material creates more of a marbled effect, while folding sections evenly can create stripes.

Once everything is tied, start adding dye with squeeze bottles or directly from the tie-dye kit. Bright shades like pink, orange and yellow feel super summery, while blues and purples create a dreamy, chill vibe. One important tip? Don’t overload every section with too many colors. Mixing too many shades together can turn muddy brown fast, especially if you use too much dye in one spot.

Now We Wait

After dyeing your clothes, wrap them in plastic bags or plastic wrap and let them sit for several hours so the colors can soak in. Leaving them overnight usually gives the best results. (This is also the perfect excuse for a movie marathon, sleepover or late-night snack run while you wait.)

The Big Reveal

Once the waiting is over, rinse your clothes under cold water until the water runs clear. Then wash them separately the first time so the extra dye doesn’t stain anything else in your laundry. Honestly, the reveal is the best part. Every piece turns out differently, and sometimes the random designs end up looking cooler than the ones you planned.

Make It Even Cuter

If you want to fully customize your new pieces, you can always add extra details afterward. Cropping an oversized tee, adding rhinestones, doodling with fabric markers or sewing on patches can make your clothes feel even more personal. Tie-dye is one of those rare DIYs that’s easy, affordable and actually cute. It gives old clothes a second life, lets you experiment with your style and guarantees nobody else will have the exact same piece as you!
