LIFE

Dear Carol

Dear Carol: “My mom won’t let me get highlights!"

Dear Carol,

I brought up the idea of getting highlights to my mom—and I wasn’t moaning or arguing—but she said, “I don’t think it will look good on you because I love your hair the way it is.” I made a presentation on why I want to get my hair balayaged and gave examples of what I want. I’ve tried everything but she still won’t let me get highlights and I don’t know what to do.

—Highlights

Dear Highlights,

A hard one. I’m a low-maintenance sort, and I bet your hair does indeed look good the way it is. There’s also a lot to be said for keeping the peace at home. And getting professional highlights can be expensive, while do-it-yourself highlights don’t always turn out so great. I like that your approach was mature and, at some point, you may succeed in convincing your mom—possibly even making highlights a gift for your next birthday. But highlights grow out, and you may decide to save up your money or the winning argument or big present for something else. Hang in there. Someday you won’t need parental permission for these things.
