5 ways to support your LGBTQ+ friends during pride month

June is Pride Month—an important time for the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and others. The purpose of this month is to commemorate and celebrate the impact this community has had on our generation. It is important to offer support to your loved ones, so they’re aware that you love them for who they are!

They’re coming out?
You may have known this entire time, or you’ve been caught completely by surprise. Whatever the case may be, let your friend know that this doesn’t change your friendship. It took a lot of trust and understanding for them to open up to you. Don’t take this moment away from them and make it about you, just offer your support.

Encourage experimentation
With all of the support lingering in the air, your friend might want to try new things that may be foreign to you. Be a voice of encouragement, let them know that you’ll support them in whatever they want to try. And if your guy friend pops out in blue lipstick, let him know how much it compliments his eyes!

Do your research
Gender identity and sexual orientation are two different things. It’s incredibly insulting to call someone by the incorrect pronoun, so its best to ask and be sure then to assume and be wrong. Educate yourself this month, look up an article on the difference between cisgender and transgender or bisexual and demisexual. Learning about your friend's culture will show your dedication to understanding them.

Listen
LGBTQ+ people go through a plethora of issues daily that you may have never experienced or thought about just for being different. Sometimes they just need someone to talk with to get out their frustrations. A listening ear can make a big difference in someone's life, and trust me they’ll thank you later.

Parade around!
All month long, many major cities are hosting festivities in honor of pride. These range from parades, parties, balls, and more. Check out your city’s pride listings, dress up in some rainbow and go! The LGBTQ+ community can be the most fun group of people to celebrate with.
