You’ve been counting down the days to summer since the start of the year, but now that the day *finally* came, you just can’t bring yourself to completely say goodbye. Whether you recently graduated (woohoo!) or you’re just missing seeing your friends every day, the end of the year can come with some surprisingly complicated emotions. We’re here to let you in on why these emotions happen—as well as how to navigate them while still making the most of your summer.
Step 1: It’s OK To Be Emotional
Sure, everyone complains about homework and early classes, but school is where so many memories are made. Whether you’re sharing inside jokes at lunch, bonding over difficult classes or you’re just happy to see your favorite people every day, the end of the year marks a major life shift. When you graduate, it can feel like you’re leaving childhood behind, so a quarter-life crisis is totally understandable—even if you’re excited for summer. Don’t be afraid to feel those heavy emotions and reminisce.
Step 2: Keep in Touch With Your BFFs

Just because high school is over doesn’t mean you won’t see your friends anymore. Make sure that trip *actually* makes it out of the group chat and go on a summer camping getaway, host a potluck or organize a movie night (Legally Blonde, anyone?). If you are going to different colleges, sending weekly photo dumps, texting life updates or scheduling monthly group FaceTimes are practical ways to stay connected.
Step 3: Turn Nostalgia Into Your Next Creative Outlet
What better time to pick up a new hobby than in the summer when your schedule frees up? Try out a new activity to document your thoughts, emotions and memories in a cute way, like starting a scrapbook of all your fave pics from the year, a mixtape of your favorite songs from the school year or a video collage with all your favorite mems.
Remember: It’s OK to reminisce on this chapter of your life, but don’t forget to be excited for new beginnings, too. There was once a time you were probably nervous about starting high school, and from here, you’ll only form more exciting memories with friends both new and old.
