So I’m in 9th grade, right? Homecoming is coming up. There’s this guy I like. Like really really like. He’s in my English class and he calls me Sarah, which isn’t my name at all. It’s another story for another time.
Anyways, I figured maybe I should ask him out to homecoming because, duh, I like him, and I think he’ll say yes. He flirts with me as I do him, so I think I’ve got a chance. I decided to do it on a Friday, but chickened out. So I decided to do it on Monday, and chickened out again. Then came Tuesday, and my friend was like, “if you don’t do it, I will do it for you! And I don’t even know him!” So I was like, crap, I better do it now.
My friends all have lockers near his, like seven or eight lockers down, so I decided to wait with them, thinking, okay, I’m being low key and not stalkery, we can do this. Well, let me mention this now, he’s like a head and a half taller than me. (I’m 5’3, so he’s really tall.) I spot him at his locker and before I can chicken out, I call his name. He heard me, and was like, “Yes Sarah?” Standing maybe ten feet away, I asked, “Want to go to homecoming with me?” Nervously clutching my books. He couldn’t hear me and asked me to repeat myself. So now I had to repeat myself. Wonderful. Asking it the first time was mortifying and yay me, now I had to do it again. So I took a few steps closer, now maybe five feet away, and asked him again a bit louder. This time having to crane my neck because he’s so tall, I took a deep breath before saying, “Want to go to homecoming with me?” Again, he asked me to repeat myself.
Go me! Now I have to do it again! Now I’m standing half a foot away from my crush and I practically have to yell to him, “want- to go- to homecoming- with me?!” Oh yes! Halfway through my sentence I accidentally lightly spit on my chin (thank GOD not on him!! It was mortifying enough trying to make myself heard). I don’t know if he noticed it or not, but I knew it was a tiny little spot. So I took my chances leaving it there, thinking that if I wiped it away that would have made it really clear that, yes, I just spit on my chin.
And his answer? A really sad smile and he said, “Sorry Sarah, I’m already going with someone else.” I don’t exactly remember what I said afterwards, but I think it was really cringey because he hasn’t joked around with me for almost a week. It. Was. Awful.
