How can I nix split ends?

I get my hair trimmed every six weeks, but I still have split ends! I’m trying to grow out my ‘do, so I don’t want to cut too much off. What can I do to get rid of split ends?

There’s only one way to get rid of split ends, and that’s to cut ‘em off. Stylists suggest snipping your locks a quarter-inch above the actual split end itself to keep your hair from continuing to split. To keep your hair healthy, sometimes you’ve gotta lop off more than you’d like.

To prevent split ends, there are a few different things you can try, but it all comes down to protecting your hair. Avoid breakage by using a moisturizing conditioner and avoiding brushing your hair when it’s wet. If you have to, grab a wide-toothed comb and work through the tangles slowly and gently.

Here are a few more tips:
- Avoid using blow dryers, straightening and curling irons. The heat dries out your hair, making it much more likely to break and dry out than if you allow it to air dry.
- Always wash and condition your hair after swimming in pools, lounging in hot tubs and splashing in the ocean. Pool chemicals and salt are bad news for your locks, so you wanna wash ‘em away as soon as you can.

- Pick up a deep conditioner or a leave-in conditioner at the drug store and give your hair the spa treatment a once every few weeks.
