GL’s Summer Eats Cheat Sheet

Whether you’re running around at camp or chillin’ in the AC, we’ve spied sneaky ways that summer can cool your get-fit kick. Here are a few quick swaps that’ll keep ya feeling great all summer.

THE SCOOP ON ICE CREAM

BEFORE Strawberry ice cream seems like a good-for-ya pick (fruit!), but a Love It-sized cup at Cold Stone Creamery is 510 calories—before add-ins.
AFTER Strawberry sorbet gives ya loads of yum for only 110 calories.

PICNIC MAKEOVER

BEFORE One piece of fried chicken has 350 calories. Plus, who knows what kind of artery-clogging grease it was fried in. Skip it!
AFTER Grilled chicken breast is a healthy-eating must. Give yours extra zing with BBQ sauce (180 calories plus sauce).

A NEW TWIST

BEFORE From parades to baseball games, buttery pretzels are everywhere…and over 350 calories.
AFTER Pack a baggie of pretzel sticks for the road. You can eat 20 sticks for a meager 110 cals. No wonder they’re a GL staff fave.

EASY AS PIE

BEFORE A wedge of peach pie with ice cream? Over 1,000 calories.
AFTER Make your sweet tooth happy with some fresh fruit. A half cup of peaches (that’s a lot!) topped with whipped cream only has 85 calories.

BEST-BET BURGER

BEFORE A cheeseburger—before you add bacon or even ketchup—can have 650 calories. Gulp!
AFTER Don’t freak, but we love buffalo burgers. They’re super-lean, packed with iron and really tasty. On a whole wheat bun, it’s a mere 260 calories.

SMARTER SIDE

BEFORE Goopy coleslaw has over 250 calories. And, who knows how long that dish has been sittin’ in the sun?
AFTER A side salad with vinaigrette and plenty of veggies is just 90 calories. Heather Bauer, RD, CDN, recommends adding five diff colors of vegetables so it’s extra nutritious.
