Eat Right

Nix the after school snack attack

Quick Q of the week: I eat breakfast and a good lunch every day, but no matter what, by the time 3 p.m. rolls around, I am starving. I eat whatever I can find…usually junk instead of the good stuff. How can I bust these bad cravings?

Answer: CEO of GirlsGoneSporty Laura Williams says, “My first suggestion is to pack a snack to take with you to school so that you can eat it later in the afternoon when you start to feel hungry. It's so hard once you hit that "starving" mode to make yourself stop eating. You'll be better off to stop it before it starts.”

Oh, and one more thing: “Also, when you first get home, try drinking some water and starting your after-school snack with something like an apple or carrot sticks,” Laura adds. “After you eat that, go outside and take a walk or start your homework. If you distract yourself with something else, you may realize you're not as hungry as you think you are. If, after 30 minutes you're still starving, make yourself half of a turkey sandwich or a bowl of soup to tide you over until dinner.”

Thanks, Laura!
