The *best* foods to eat while on your period

Your period can be the most annoying and painful time of the month. There is nothing worse than period symptoms: cramps, mood swings and bloating are just a few of the pestering signs that Mother Nature is around. But there are ways to make your period a little less terrible. From sweet to savory, here are six foods that are life-saving while on your period:

Chocolate
Yes, the rumors are true. According to expert Elisabeth Morray, eating small amounts of chocolate with 65% or more cacao, dark chocolate, can help alleviate cramping and PMS. Dark chocolate has antioxidants and is also a source of magnesium, which reduces mood swings. and it helps regulate your serotonin (a.k.a. the “happy hormone”). The higher percentage of cacao, the better.

Leafy greens
Foods like spinach and kale are life-savers while on your period. Leafy greens are filled with iron, which gets lost when you are menstruating. If you make a smoothie and throw in a handful of spinach or kale, I promise you won’t even be able to taste it. Trust us: Adding greens to your diet is easier than you think.  Yogurt is a source of calcium, which can help to reduce PMS and relax your muscles. Add some fruit and honey for a sweet treat, or use it as the base of your smoothie (with those leafy greens!). Get creative!

Bananas
Bananas are rich in vitamin B6 and potassium, which can stop you from retaining water and feeling bloated. They are also great sources of potassium, which can help prevent muscle cramping. Pro tip: Frozen bananas dipped in dark chocolate are the ultimate period-soothing treat.

Avocado
Foods that are rich in good fats can be helpful and much more filling than junk food. You know what that means: Feel free to splurge on the guac at Chipotle.

Salmon

Fish seems a little out of the ordinary, but the Omega-3s and B-12 vitamins in the first are perf for alleviating the pain of cramps, as well as taking down the crankiness that comes with PMS! Take a bite and sit back while this savory food relaxes your muscles and makes having your period that much easier.
