You text every day, always end up sitting together and know their go-to coffee order without even having to ask. In other words? Peak bestie behavior. Except lately, listening to Olivia Rodrigo’s “stupid song” suddenly has a whole new meaning.
Uh oh lover girl, you might’ve caught the feels.
Realizing you might have a crush on one of your closest friends can send you straight into a spiral, especially when you genuinely love the friendship you already have. Before you start daydreaming about your friends-to-lovers arc, ask yourself these five Q’s to figure out whether you’ve caught feelings or simply have a friend you adore.
1. What do you actually want to happen between you?
Forget whether you could date for a sec. What do you genuinely want? Maybe imagining holding hands, going on a real date or finally having that movie-worthy first kiss makes your stomach do backflips. Or that feels kinda off, and what you actually want is more arcade visits and Saturday coffee runs.
Being super close to someone can create a lot of emotional bonding, but that doesn’t automatically make it romantic. Pay attention to the kind of closeness you’re craving, not just how much you love having them around.
2. How would you feel if they started dating someone else?

Picture your friend texting you tomorrow to announce they are *officially* off the market. What’s your first reaction?
If you’re excited to hear every detail, your feelings might be firmly in bestie territory. If the thought makes your stomach sink because a tiny part of you wishes they were dating *you* instead? Yeah, that’s worth noticing. Just don’t treat jealousy as instant proof of a crush. Sometimes we get weird when a close friend starts dating because we’re worried about losing time with them. Ask yourself what you’d actually be jelly of: their romance, or their attention?
3. Are you crushing on them…or your friendship dynamic?

They already listen to your rants, remember tiny details you’ve mentioned once and lend you their sweater when it’s cold out. No wonder the thought of dating them sounds pretty perf.
Now imagine taking away all the reasons they’re an amazing friend. Are you attracted to them as a person? Do you feel that little spark when you’re together? Would you still want to date them if becoming a couple meant your dynamic changed? Sometimes “my best friend would make the perfect partner” and “I want my best friend to be my partner” sound basically the same in your head, but they’re really not.
4. Do you think about them differently from your other friends?
You probs miss your besties when they’re away and get excited when their name pops up on your phone. So don’t hit the romantic emergency button just because you’re doing the same with this friend.
Instead, look for what feels different. Do you suddenly care wayyy more about how you look before you see them? Replay certain interactions afterward? Catch yourself imagining the two of you on an actual date rather than your usual hangout? One moment might mean nothing, but a pattern can tell you *a lot* more.
5. If they told you they liked you tomorrow…what would you hope happens next?

No time for a five-page pros-and-cons list here. Imagine they look at you tomorrow and say, “OK, this is awk, but I like you.”
Once the initial WHAT?! wears off, what are you secretly hoping comes next? Do you want to say you like them too and see where things go? Or does your brain immediately jump to wishing you could rewind the convo? Your gut reaction doesn’t have to make the decision for you, but it can reveal what you want before all the “but what if…” thoughts pile on.
And if you finish all five questions still sitting firmly in the land of IDK? That’s OK, too. You don’t need to put a label on every butterfly immediately. Keep hanging out, give your feelings a little time and see what sticks. Your friends-to-lovers plotline (if there even is one) doesn’t need to be resolved by the next episode.
