Here's how to read sustainably
Reading is one of our comfort hobbies. It distracts us from our not-so-fab days *and* educates us in a fun way. But did you know that physical books can be harmful to the environment? About 320 million books are sent to landfills each year and, even when recycled, are not always repurposed, since book covers are often bound with non-recyclable materials such as glue and strings. If you're looking for ways to go green while still enjoying your fave pasttime, don't stress. Here are some easy ways to read sustainably.
Thrift your books
From clothes to furniture, purchasing second-hand reduces a lot of waste. The same goes for books—not only is it more environmentally friendly, but it's less expensive too. Going to thrift stores like Goodwill is a great option, and there are plenty of online stores where you can purchase previously owned books.
Better World Books has almost *every* book available to ship at a low cost. Plus, they donate one book to a non-profit organization for every book purchased. And, of course, trusty sites like eBay, Mercari and Depop always have good selections.
Visit libraries
If you want to read more sustainably, libraries will become your new BFF. Borrowing books reduces waste—and it's free! Libraries also have great resources such as book clubs and unique selections from nonfiction to children's novels. (P.S. Donate books you no longer want to your local library.)
Download audiobooks
Using your phone, computer or Kindle to read online is another fantastic option, since eBooks create zero paper waste. There are plenty of online subscriptions for audiobooks (we like Libro.fm). This way, you can still purchase from and support the author while still supporting independent booksellers.
