Must List

Kerri Medders' "Fall Away" is the farewell-to-summer jam you need

If her Instagram is any indication, 16-year-old Houston-raised singer/songwriter Kerri Medders has been keeping plenty busy this summer. And things get even busier today as she releases her new song "Fall Away." This talent doesn't shy away from the work, though, and she's known for *years* that music was her destiny.

"When I was 7 years old, I was like, 'I actually want to do this as a career!'" Kerri gushed to GL. Her previous releases include "Morning Coffee" and covers of Vance Joy's "Riptide" and Sam Smith's "Stay With Me," but nothing is quite as fab as this new track. Press play on "Fall Away" below...

We were so excited to catch up with Kerri about her love for music, dream collabs and, of course, her new track.

Girls' Life: What first sparked your interest in music and singing?

Kerri Medders: Growing up I had a teenage sister and I was still little—like 6 or 7—and she was always bringing all the 90’s music in. So I grew up with Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, kind of all of that. I was like, "Oh, I really want to do that," because they liked what they were doing.

GL: You play both piano and guitar. Which instrument do you prefer?

Kerri: I think they both have different sounds. Piano is a more laid back, more vulnerable instrument. That’s how I see it. And I feel like guitar you can rock out more—that's so generic, but you get it. You get two different feels from both of them.

GL: Are there any artists that you would love to collaborate with?

Kerri: I would actually really like to collaborate with Shawn Mendes. I think we have two different, unique styles toward our music and everything. I think it would be a nice mash-up.

GL: What's the inspiration behind your new release "Fall Away?"

Kerri: It’s kind of a summer-y song if you listen to it, even though [summer's] almost over. I want people to reflect on it and think about the summer memories that they had.

GL: You said on your Facebook that this is your favorite song you’ve ever made. Why is that?

Kerri: I think it’s because it’s the next step from all my other music and as an artist because of how it was produced and how the vocals are.

GL: What else do you have coming up?

Kerri: I’m actually writing and I’m still continuing to be in the studio so I’m thinking about releasing an EP at the beginning of next year and I’m really excited. I want to stick with the producers who helped me with "Fall Away" and have them help me create my EP, because I really think we worked together well. So "Fall Away" is just the beginning of all the rest of the songs.
