Do you go to a tutor for help with school? If so, you're not alone, according a recent article in the The New York Times. 

In the past, tutors were focused on helping students who had learning disabilities or were doing poorly in school. More and more though, academically high-achieving teens are going to tutors to ensure they get A’s in tough classes. 

The rise in use of tutors has sparked some debate over fairness--tutors can be expensive, and the fact is that not everyone who needs or wants one can afford one.  

Some people think harder classes than in the past and more emphasis on standardized tests (like the dreaded SATs) are the reason more kids are turning to tutors for homework help. "As top colleges and universities have become a good deal more competitive, some high schools have certainly gotten more difficult," wrote a tutor in the The New York Times. 

Students today are also facing a highly competitive college admissions process, where a slightly higher grade or test score might make the difference in getting into your dream school. Whether or not classes are actually harder than they used to be, there is a ton of emphasis on test scores when it comes to applying to college.  And parents are taking notice--some parents hire tutors for kids as young as four years old to make sure they're on track for getting into the best schools.
