Meet Cimorelli, a band of six sisters from California who got their fame from YouTube. Christina, Katherine, Lisa, Amy, Lauren and Dani Cimorelli, ages 12 to 22, rose to fame back in 2009 when their cover of Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The USA” went viral. Now, with over 300 million views on their YouTube channel and almost one million subscribers, the Cimorelli sisters are finishing up their debut album. We’ve got the inside scoop on their plans for the near future and what it’s truly like to be a Cimorelli sis.
What inspired you to get into music?
Christina: Our dad loves music and is always playing it really loudly in his car. Our mom is a classical pianist and was in a Christian rock band when she was a teen. In the womb, we were hearing classical pieces and our house is such a musical home, so we naturally grew to love it.
How do you agree on what songs to record?

Lisa: We usually try to do songs that came out recently, so people are searching them—the iTunes top 10. And then we have to make all the words appropriate, any lyrical changes…

Christina: We take a vote. We go through and say, “Do you guys think we should do this song?” and then we all agree on it. Then, we split up the song.

Once you agree on a song, what’s the recording and video process like?
Christina: It takes two full days of recording. Then we all have a meeting and figure out what we should do for that video. Then we ask ourselves, “What is the theme here?” and pick out our outfits. It takes four hours to film. Then Lisa edits it.
Lisa: Sometimes it takes up to 15 hours because I have to do the video and then color correction and make the audio good. It takes a long time, but it’s worth it.
Fun fact: The girls told us they filmed their cover of “What Makes You Beautiful” on a beach that was really close to the beach used in One Direction’s original music vid.

What is a day in the life of a Cimorelli sister like?

Lisa: Every day is different! We work hard and play hard.

Christina: Either we get to just chill out and make videos or we’re doing a lot of business stuff (meetings and recording)—it’s back and forth.
Lauren: Me, Amy and Dani still have to do our school work.

Katherine: Then we’ll practice for a couple hours, then go to the movies or on walks, or line dancing.

What are some of your hobbies?

Christina: Working out, reading Psychology-type books and making crafts.
Katherine: Poetry. I’m really into writing. And Baking. I’m going to be putting up a cooking video soon, so that’ll be really fun.
Lisa: I like painting my nails really interesting designs.
Amy: I do anything that involves singing really loud. I swing on our swing set and sing so loud the neighbors can hear me.
Lauren: I like drawing and painting. I also like skateboarding.
Dani: I love going to the beach, especially wakeboarding. And I like climbing trees and rollerblading.
Which has been your favorite cover to record so far?
Katherine: “Good Time” was so fun to make.
Amy: “Call Me Maybe” with MattyB. He is so cute.
Lauren: Definitely “You and I.”
Lisa: “It Will Rain/Chasing Pavements” mash up.
Dani: I liked “How to Love.”
Christina: “Call Me Maybe” because I can watch it a billion times in a row. And “Million Bucks.”
Dani: And “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
In unison: That was so fun!

What are your plans for 2013? Anything you can tell us about new songs that you’re recording?
Christina: The only thing that we can say is that there’s something really huge we’re working on. We can’t say what, but we’re really excited!
Check out Cimorelli’s YouTube page, follow the sisters on Twitter and like them on Facebook to stay updated on what 2013 has to bring for the girls. We can’t wait!
