The cast of Ivy and Julie 1976 talk friendship, fun and fam

We've all been faced with tough decisions. Sometimes they're so tough that even when you do finally make a choice, it can still feel like you aren't making the right one. Finding balance is difficult, to say the least, and no one knows that better than Ivy Ling (Nina Lu) in Amazon's An American Girl Story – Ivy & Julie 1976: A Happy Balance.

In the Amazon special, out today, Ivy is faced with a tough decision: celebrate Chinese New Year with her family or compete in the all-city gymnastics meet. She's stuck between two things she loves, but she gets through it with the help of the people she loves: her BFF, Julie Albright (Hannah Nordberg), and her older bro, Andrew Ling (Lance Lim).

Nina, Hannah and Lance know a thing or two about making tough decisions IRL, too. Check out what the cast had to say about family, friendship and having fun.

Nina on family traditions
"My family is similar to my movie family because they both are a *bit* strict with me, both of them are very large...But unlike my movie family, most of my family is in China, and I don't get to visit them often."

Hannah on being a good friend
"Julie is very encouraging of Ivy’s love of gymnastics. She cheers Ivy on at every opportunity. When Ivy realizes that her gymnastics meet and her family’s big Chinese New Year dinner are on the same night, Julie encourages Ivy to talk to her parents about the conflict." Turns out, Hannah is a amazing friend on- and off-screen! Check out her tips for helping a friend through a tough time. "Be a very good listener and let them know that you are by their side through it all. Sometimes friends just want to be heard, they don’t necessarily want you to give them solutions. They just want to feel supported and understood and have their feelings be okay."

Lance on being the golden child
"Andrew doesn’t have many issues in the film since he is a star child," Lance told GL on his character. "So one of the issues he deals with would be keeping this idealistic perfect child image he’s had all these years." Yikes! Talk about a lot of pressure to be put on one kid.

Hannah on hangin' off set
"Before we started shooting, Nina and I spent a day together hanging out in Chinatown, eating lunch, shopping and just having fun together. We have a very similar sense of humor, so Nina and I are always laughing and joking around!" Despite living far apart now, Hannah and Nina are *always* in touch. "[We] talk on the phone, FaceTime, text and Snapchat as often as we can. We are the kind of friends that don’t need to see each other every day to feel close. Our friendship bond is forever."

Lance on sibling love
"Andrew has his own way of encouraging Ivy," Lance says. "He’s not always super sweet to her as all siblings have their own rivalry, but when it comes down to it Andrew is always there to support Ivy and help her in times of need."

Nina on finding balance
"[An American Girl Story — Ivy and Julie 1976] shows that to find balance in your life doesn't mean you should embrace one part of your life and ignore the other. You can fit in and be happy even if you are different. From this special I think I learned a bit about balance, like balancing the important things in my life, that I am no different than others, and to continue the things I love."
