Try these winter makeup hacks for dry skin

Wintry weather is great for hot cocoa and sledding dates with your besties...but it's pretty darn *awful* for your face. The cold majorly dries out your skin and makes putting on makeup even harder than normal. Ugh. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to fight the flakiness with just the help of a few products (and some secret tips!). Try one of our faves below the next time you go walking in a winter wonderland:

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. Flaky skin is just a given when it comes to colder temps, and it's a nightmare for applying foundation. Scrub off those pesky flakes before beginning your makeup routine so that it all goes on smoothly. This applies to the rest of your bod, toouse a sugar or salt scrub all over when you're in the shower before lotioning up.

Stick to cream. Whether it's foundation or highlighter, using powder will only enhance your dry skin by sticking to any flaky spots. Instead, try a cream version of your fave products. Bonus: A lot of creams (especially foundations) have added hyrdating nutrients and vitamins in them.

Skip foundation completely. Gasp! Hear us out, though. You can get similar coverage by applying a tinted moisturizer so you get the benefits of protecting your skin from the harsh weather while still looking #flawless.

Change up your colors. Okay, so you're obsessed with your "blackest black" mascara and eyeliner. That's great for the summer months when you have a nice glow. But in the winter, we're all a little bit more pale from staying inside which means your go-to color palette will look extra harsh against your skin. Not cute. Swap your blacks out for browns for a softer, prettier vibe.

Moisturize before bed. Obviously, exfoliating will help you get rid of that flaky layer. But it can also be harsh on your skin. Make sure you replenish whatever oil and moisture is stripped away by moisturizing at night. If you're extra dry, you might be tempted to use a thicker cream but be careful because they can clog pores. Instead, try a face oil for all the moisturize and none of the heaviness or residue. Re-apply in the morning, if needed.
