5 simple steps to treat sunburn

Nothing is worse then spending a splendid day in the summer sun with your besties only to come home and discover that your skin is burnt beyond belief. Sunscreen is an absolute must anytime you’re out in the sun (it should be part of your everyday beauty routine in the summer!) but if you left the SPF at home or forgot to reapply throughout the day, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends these simple steps.

Put a cool rag on the sunburned area.

Doing this a few times a day will take some of the heat out of your skin which will make you feel much more comfortable. Cool baths and showers will help, too.

    Apply lotion or moisturizer...

That contains Aloe vera or soy. Both contain natural cooling agents that will decrease any discomfort to your skin.

    Drink a lot of water

Sunburn soaks up all the moisture from your skin, so drinking H2O will help you avoid dehydration. Get yourself a reusable water bottle (if you don’t already have one) fill it, drink and repeat. Bonus: drinking lots of water is awesome for your complexion.

    Relax.

Chill out in clothes made of tightly woven fabrics (this minimizes the amount of sunlight that can get through to your skin) and leave any sun blisters covered up so they can heal.

    Talk to your parents

Ask your ’rents about taking ibuprofen to reduce any swelling, discomfort or redness you might have. If you feel weak, dizzy or nauseated, ask your parents to take you to the doctor. It could mean that the sunburn is making you sick, and that’s not good.
