The pony tales: 4 styles to try right now
Saddle up! We’re trotting out new spins on the tried ‘n’ true tail for fall. Pro stylist Luis Bujia shows us there’s no such thing as a one-trick pony.
Class
An undone ‘do never looked so smart. Attention to details earns you an A+.
• Spritz dry shampoo over your entire mane for tousled, gritty texture. Emphasis at the roots adds oomph.
• A middle part looks pretty and prim. Gently pull up hair at the back of the crown for messy-but-cool volume.
• Keep it polished with subtle curl in the bangs and tail. A wide-barrel curling iron gives ends a finished touch, in all of 10 seconds.
Party
A bubbly style with a nod to neon makes you the boldest babe at the bash.
• Prep dry hair with a dime-size dab of smoothing serum to keep strands from frizzing up.
• Play around with elastic placement. Four bands work for longer hair, while one poofed section at the top of a pony is cute on cropped coifs.
• Accent each section with cute ties for a presh pop. Neon bands, ribbons, or even wrapped necklaces make it unique.
Dance
With a little height and a wrapped elastic, this almost-updo is the epitome of chic.
• Back-combing at the crown with a brush creates the body for this fresh bouffant.
• Use a comb to swipe strands into a sleek side part. Grab a 3-inch section on the opposite side, then pull it back to wrap the hair band.
• A blast of shine spray ups the gloss factor and keeps flyaways at bay in all your dance-night snaps.
Date
Low ponies with some wave feel romantic. Pretty enough for Homecoming, too.
• Pull out 2-inch sections of hair at the front of your face, then pull the rest into a low pony at the nape of your neck.
• Twist front sections down along your hairline, then wrap ‘em around your elastic when you reach the pony and secure with a pin.
• Get soft waves by using the barrel of a curling iron (hint: avoid the clamp to keep curls soft).
