Feeling flaky got you flustered? Check with a dermatologist for a definite diagnosis of dandruff. “Dandruff is not very common in adolescence,” says dermatologist Dr. Alexa Boer Kimball. “Sometimes, the problem is psoriasis—red, scaly skin on the scalp, elbows and knees.” But if dandruff is the culprit, Dr. Kimball recommends turbo-charged treatments that contain pyrithione zinc, an ingredient that kills dandruff-causing fungus. Your dermatologist can also prescribe a mild steroid gel or lotion for your scalp. Meanwhile, eliminate black sweaters from your wardrobe until the problem is under control.
