Put your hearts up: Opening up about the Sandy Hook shooting

Just a few months ago, the world reeled following the Aurora movie theater shooting. And now, here we are again, shocked and horrified and unbelievably scared that it could happen to us, and, if we’re lucky, grateful that today, it wasn’t us.

This morning, a young man walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., after murdering his mother in her home, and proceeded to shoot and kill 26 other people, including 20 children, before killing himself.

What else can I say, girls, other than, “How could anyone do such a thing?” I have no answer for that, because I truly can’t imagine. But I know we need to talk about it—discuss our grief and our anger and our pain. And then, we need to start talking about change. What can we do for the families? For the victims? For the community of Sandy Hook and Newtown? For our own communities as they wonder if they’re next? And what can we do to ensure that something so terrible never, ever happens again?

I don’t have answers, darlings, but I do know that talking will help. Talk to your parents and siblings and friends and teachers. Speak honestly and openly. Don’t judge others for what they say, just listen and respond. Remember, everyone’s opinion is valid and deserves to be expressed, whether you agree with it or not.

If you’re having trouble dealing with your grief, please take a look at this post, and talk to a parent, counselor or trusted adult.

Love to you all,

Brittany @ GL, and the rest of the Girls’ Life staff

Tell me: How are you doing in light of this tragedy? Remember to be kind and respectful to each other, please.

Editor's note: Article updated on Dec. 17 to reflect updated information on the tragedy

What I don't understand is how can you look into the eyes of a 6 year old (let alone 20) and just shoot them? It takes one sick minded man to break the hearts of the whole country.

When I heard about this, I was utterly and completely shocked. Elementary school kids. This is absolutely horrible, and I'm at a total loss for words. How could someone look into the eyes of a child and STILL pull the trigger????? My heart goes out to the families of the victims and to the survivors. You will all be in my prayers.

I'm sorry, but this article is beyond inaccurate. A tragedy such as this deserves the FACTS, not false 'journalism'. Show some respect, please.
