A few mornings ago, I grabbed my yoga mat, popped A.M./P.M. Yoga for Beginners into the DVD player and settled in for a workout. I admit it, I was not a happy camper: Getting up earlier than usual for yoga? Not my M.O.

The DVD comes with two workouts you ideally do in one day—the a.m. section in the morning to energize you, the p.m. section in the afternoon or evening to relax you.  The a.m. workout is led by acclaimed yoga instructor Rodney Yee—on the beach, natch. Once I got into the groove, I felt my body start to throw off the sleepiness, loosen up and (shocker of shockers) wake up.  The moves were easy to follow and didn’t leave me feeling like an inflexible goofball doing silly things at the crack of dawn. And by the time it was over, I felt really good about myself and ready to conquer the day. Who can say no to a li’l dose of carpe diem?

Not I, apparently, because as soon as I got home that evening, I stretched back out on the floor for round 2, a p.m. yoga session led by Patricia Walden. As soon as I started focusing on my breathing, I noticed the stress leaving my body—ahh. Whether it’s a long day at work, a fight with my parents or simply the rigors of everyday life, I think this is one I’ll be coming back to. It’s easy, it’s paced slowly and each workout is under 30 minutes, so it’s easy to squeeze in to my daily routine.

Want to score your own copy of A.M./P.M. Yoga for Beginners and give yoga a try? Well, lucky for you, we talked to the amazing folks at Gaiam and they’re letting us give away two copies!

I'm in a camp that's gymnastics and swimming this summer! Well so far i've gotten 2 blisters, sore muscles, sunburn and pimples! What do i do? I'm a wreck right now! My hair is all dried out, my feet and body hurts, and my face is giving me a headache! help? Frown

Hey girl,

Ouch! You need some time to pamper yourself! First off, try to find a good conditioner that will take care of your hair even while you're swimming every day. Check out this article for ways to protect your hair from the pool: http://www.girlslife.com/post/2012/06/06/Pool-Proof-Hair-5-easy-steps-to-protecting-your-tresses.aspx

Next, your skin. Wash your skin twice a day with a gentle cleanser to clean out all the dirt, sweat, makeup, and anything else you get caught in those pores. Use at LEAST a moisturizer with SPF to protect your skin, but use straight up sunscreen if you know you're going to be in the sun for longer than 30 minutes. You need to protect it from sunburn no matter what! The blisters are tough because your skin just has to get used to the rubbing - and the same goes for the muscles. You're using muscles that you never had to use before, so they're going to be sore because you're working them out. Take warm baths and use a hot water bottle to soothe your muscles. Ask a parent to rub them a little for you, or you can massage them yourself using rolling motions with your thumbs. Try to relax and, if you feel in pain or like you're pushing yourself too hard (to the point of hurting yourself), don't be afraid to stop for a little bit. It's great to challenge yourself, but you also need to know your limits so you don't actually do harm <3

MOD MOD MOD!
So, I did horrible eating today. Like all fried food. I know it's bad, and I'm trying to do better, but my question is is that do you think I should still do my workout today? Even though I've eaten crappy? Should I skip it and start over tomorrow? Thanks!!!Smile

Hey girlie,

Even MORE of a reason to do your workout today! Definitely don't skip your workouts, and don't give up on eating healthy because you had a "horrible" meal. Don't even wait until tomorrow to fix it - vow that, after the fried food meal, you're going to be better from here on out. Say you get fast food for lunch. That doesn't mean the rest of the day doesn't count. You should still do your workout, you should still have a healthy and well-balanced dinner, you should still drink lots of water and stay away from junk food/sweets. It's normal to slip up every once in a while, but don't let it set you back so far. Get back on track sooner rather than later - and you'll feel WAY better <3

I really need help. I need to loose weight. I'll do whatever it takes. For the past 7 days I've been eating around 700 calories, but the loss is not enough. I don't know what to do. I feel like I can never enjoy food again, like it's just a chore. I don't know what to do I feel like I'm not in control of my body.

Hey girlie,

700 calories is NOT good for weight loss. I know it doesn't make sense, but you actually have to eat more calories in order to lose weight. Calories give your body fuel - and eating actually helps your metabolism keep working to burn fat. So, instead of cutting back on calories, focus on the TYPES of food you're eating. Choose veggies instead of candy. Choose lean meats or fish instead of fried chicken or greasy hamburgers. Cut out all soda, juices, energy drinks, etc. Talk to your doctor to find the right daily calorie count for you - and do NOT starve yourself. Like I said, it actually takes food to kickstart your metabolism in the morning and keep it working throughout the day. Pair that with daily exercise and you'll feel results soon! If you have questions or feel overwhelmed with body issues/your reaction to food, you should talk to someone about it - a trusted adult, a counselor, a clergy person, or a doctor. You don't have to look at food and feel like you're battling it. It's fuel for your bod, so you should talk to someone about these feelings so you can value food for the amazing tool it is!

Hey! Okay so whenever I'm on my period I have this strange smell down there. When I'm sitting down I can totally smell it. I know one of the first possible solutions is a shower but my mom tells me it's not good to take a shower while on it. I'm afraid other ppl can possibly smell the smell. What can I do to get rid of the smell or at least reduce the smell? Plz help! Thanks! Oh and can you hide my post plz? Smile

Hey girlie,

You should definitely shower regularly all the time, even when you're on your period. You have to keep it clean and fresh down there! Try to wear cotton panties - they'll breathe better and won't trap odors. Change your pad regularly and stash some feminine wipes (Always, Vagisil, and Summers Eve make great ones) in your purse so you can freshen up at school, at the mall, wherever you use the bathroom Smile

I'm almost overweight. Frown I try to wake up early everymorning to go run a mile or jog, and I do get to run but it's not like everymorning. Are there any workouts I can do lose weight at home on the days that I can't wake up early to go running? How long should I workout so it guaranteed I lose weight? And also, this might sound crazy but I really want to grow taller... Is there anything I can do to grow taller?

Hey babe,

We have sooo many exercises perfect for inside workouts! Check out our Workouts section: http://www.girlslife.com/category/workouts.aspx and choose the best workouts for you - the ones that sound the most fun, the ones that work best for the indoor space you have, etc. Push yourself to work out a little longer than you think you can each day. That way, you're challenging yourself and getting even stronger! And I wish we had better news for ya, but unfortunately you can't do anything to grow taller. It's all genetics! <3
