EDITOR'S BLOG: I can see the finish line…

Sorta. I’m still training for the half-marathon. I trotted 11 miles for my Sunday long run. But I definitely have more work to do before the race. Though, as a friend of my family said the other night, “Shouldn’t you be done training by now?” Eek, good call. It’s in nine days!

So, here’s what I’m pondering this week: How can I balance my workouts and life, so that I’m perfectly prepped? What do you girls do when you have a big game/tryout/competition coming up?

My first thought was simple: Double sessions! “I know, I’ll run in the morning and then go to the gym after work.” But I don’t have a coach, and I’d end probably end up hurt. No, thanks. On to Plan B.

I’m gonna incorporate more back-to-basics, track-practice inspired moves into my workouts. Plyometrics (like squat and lunge jumps), push-ups and plenty of ab exercises should do the trick. I’ve gotta build strength, so my body can survive all those miles.

Oh, and I’m gonna get tons of sleep. Because, seriously, I’m zonked. G’nite!

Healthy Hearts,
Katie A.

i don't like running- too intense. i've heard that for runners , like after a mile or two, they don't even feel like they're working out, and it's all incorporating so you don't have to push yourself so hard. idk.
i'm so bored.... i wish i was at my crush's foot ball game... but i'm not. stupid homework.Frown

***MOD*** PLEASE RESPOND (:
okay so there's this guy (he's 10th and i'm 9th)and i heard from one of his friends that he liked me. they tried hooking me up with him 3 different times, but i said i don't know since i didn't really know him (we're both in marching band-he plays the drums and i'm do colorguard so i see him like 4 times a week) but now that i'm getting to know him more, and my friend telling me that he's really nice, i really like him now. him and his friends look at me in the hallway and smile (: we have a football game tomorrow night that we're performing at, so there's a good chance his friend is gonna say something to me again. i'm thinking of saying "well why can't he ask me himself" so it sounds like i'm niterested, but not so much to scare him away. any more advice? especially if my crush is there-i don't know what to say!

i love running! this is my second year running cross country and it will be my third year running track in the spring. my friend ran a half marathon when she was a freshman and she said the best thing is to just stay relaxed and keep moving! the same thing i do before a race Smile

Try speed work outs, like 1 min sprint, 3 min easy, or 3 min hard and 1 min easy. It hurts, but really gets you up on your game. Also, do 800's and 1000's in a certain amount of time. Doing long run after long run isn't going to help you. Don't do double shifts either, unless you're in seriously good shape. Do one hard workout a day, so that your legs feel "heavy." But be careful with these, you don't want to hurt yourself. Try doing 45 mins easy on Monday's and Thursday's or something like that. Don't wear yourself out too much.

ohhhh! i love running! im on a group called srla(students run la) and we run the LA marathon! this is my second year ilove it! we go on 4-6 mile runs mon-thurs after school. its so much fun because everyone is so supportive i run halfs too so pretty much just run at a pace so you dont get tired, we use these energy cubes theyre like gummys and they give you tonsa energy! youre gunna love your half!

Caligrl4eva on 10/2/2008 10:04:23 PM

I use to run 10 miles 2 days a week and like 4/6 on the average day
I suggest reading up on it because that's what I do
if a book is about running or nutrition I am interested.

But I have read a book called "runners diet" and they had a whole bunch of brilliant tips on how to eat foods that help runners preform there best
it was the 25 25 50 diet

25% of calorie intake is healthy fats (nuts, fish and stuff)
25% protein(I think)
50% healthy carbohydrates (like fruits, veggies whole wheat bread and all that good stuff)
I suggest you read it(it wasn't just meant for runners but also walkers too)

typomaster on 10/3/2008 2:07:39 AM

you have to run the full length itself or your body will not know exactly how it feels or know what to do. keep up the long runs too.Smile
