Editor Obsession: Nancy Drew Mystery Series

While they may not be the newest, hottest, most talked about books on the shelves at Barnes and Noble this fall, Nancy Drew books are still definitely a good read. I promise.

When my mom first introduced me to Nancy in middle school, I was immediately turned off by the ugly yellow hardcover and the old-fashioned illustrations throughout the book. But surprisingly, when I reluctantly opened the book and started reading, I was hooked.

Not only is Nancy intelligent, loyal and generous, she is always up for some kind of adventure. Whether it involves nasty villains, dangerous sleuthing, puzzling clues or exciting car chases, there is no mystery that Nancy can’t solve.

From counterfeiters and embezzlers to robbers and imposters, author Carolyn Keene tackles every possible type of mystery in this series, with Nancy always acting as the calm and graceful heroine, no matter how dire her situation is.  When she is caught in the secret meeting of the horrible Black Snake Cult in “The Secret of Red Gate Farm” or bound and gagged in a closet during “The Quest of the Missing Map,” Nancy uses her ingenuity and courage to continuously (and successfully) outwit her captors. Plus, her friends Bess, George and Ned are perfect examples of loyal pals—just the kind of people I’d want next to me if I was investigating secret bungalows, dark dungeons and abandoned mansions!

Love her or hate her, you have to admit that Nancy is one brave chick. For all you interested gals, pop over to your local library and borrow a couple mysteries. I recommend starting at the beginning—“The Secret of the Old Clock” is a classic.

Not into Nancy? What heroines do you love to read about? Let me know!

I love Nancy Drew! But I think the best mystery series ever has to be Trixie Belden. I think they're a lot more exiting then Nancy Drew.

sparky4me on 9/26/2008 8:39:14 AM

Those books are OK. I mean, I read a few, but they are a little old-fashioned. Still like em, though!

ShopperSoccerGurl on 9/26/2008 11:53:08 AM

Nancy Drews are a really good read. I do also recommend Trixie Belden. Trixie is a bit more, human than Nancy, who never seems to make a mistake.

TotallySarah on 9/26/2008 3:20:34 PM

I have read about ten of the books in the series and thought they were okay. To me, they sort of got like the Scooby-Doo TV series--repetitve and predictable and a little too "happily ever after" for me.

just_keep_swimming on 9/26/2008 3:37:07 PM

i like them. i started reading em in 3rd grade. if i'm out of things 2 read, then i just pick 1 up & read it. it's prob. my 2nd or 3rd fave series.

I love nancy drew! I tried to read them all when I was in third grade, but the two libraries I went to were missing some of them Frown. now I sometimes check the shelves when I'm there and I can't remember which ones I haven't read so I end up checking out like 7 of them just to find out that I've already read all of them. but I read them again anyway since I can pretty much read two of them in less than an hour.

M... on 9/27/2008 3:01:59 PM

Nessie Black on 9/27/2008 5:00:12 PM

I've read all of the old ones and a couple of the new ones in this series and I love them! I also love the computer games except they're really hard and I always have to find cheats online

AJpink on 9/27/2008 5:43:09 PM

I love Nancy Drew!!!! Shes awesome! even though the books take place in the early 1900's, its cool having fashion from that time incorporated into the books I would totally dress like her if i could!! I love the computer games too they are so much fun and addicting! if u love solving mysteries youll LOVE them!!

snuffylvr on 9/27/2008 8:42:49 PM

though I do like a more present-day mystery solver: SAMMY KEYES!!

S-A-M-M-Y K-E-Y-E-S!!!! if you haven't already and are into Nancy or Trixie, check these out!

_savvygirl_15 on 9/29/2008 5:26:11 PM

lexiegirl95 on 9/29/2008 6:11:18 PM

Nancy Drew is awesome, but for me, my fave books are those by Tamora Pierce. All her books have amazing heroines that are strong and courageous. I definitely recommend reading either Nancy or Tamora's books to any girl!

hellokittygrl on 10/10/2008 11:58:32 AM

I have almost all the nancy drew books..(the older ones) and I still read them over and over even though I'm 18!!

I absolutely love trixie belden too Jim is just too cute! lol if Edward cullen hadn't come along I think I would still be hooked on Jim.

I also really like the hardy boy mysteries but not as much..lol though Joe is super cute.. I love is antics and quick temper.

Go Edward!!

koolgurl on 10/13/2008 4:43:10 PM

I am 13 and Nancy Drew just never gets old! And whats even better, if you think that they are old (they were made in 1930), you might want to try the computer games! I recomend Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon. and right now Target has a set you can buy that has four games for only 30.00 dollars! One game is 20 dollars so its a really good deal!
