EDITOR'S BLOG: Loafin' Around

When I bake, my BFF gets nervous. I don't blow up the kitchen, but I tend to cook more when I'm ultra-stressed. Last night was diff, though. This week we're trying to eat local foods. I'm pretty good about going to the farmer's market (saturday a.m.!), so I wanted to take this mission in a new direction.

I got back to old-world eating this week by baking up some whole-wheat bread. I got the recipe from my Nana's ancient cookbook. The process too way looonger than I thought (and kneading the dough was surprisingly good exercise). I got freaked adding butter and sugar (isn’t this supposed to be healthy?), but then I remembered that lotsa store-bought bread has HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP in it. Um, ew. Real brown sugar and a bit of butter are def better, right?

A few hours after I began, the bread was baked and I was exhausted. While I won’t be trading my pen ‘n’ paper for a chef’s hat anytime soon (the bread was more English muffin than sandwich slice), it was great to have something I pounded out with my own two hands. And, hey, at least I don’t have to eat my organic peanut butter straight out of the jar...unless, of course, I want to!

Healthy Hearts,
Katie A.

Blog It Out... Is there anything that has to be homemade for you to eat? Maybe it’s your mom’s famous chili or your dad’s blueberry muffins. What’s your fave thing to whip up in the kitchen?

I love cooking! Especially from scratch! It makes me feel like I accomplished something and everyone enjoys what I cooked later!

I LOVE making bread with my grandma!!!!!!!!!!!! It's soooooooooooooooooooo good after taking it out of the oven! And it's WAY healthier than store-bou=ght bread! Smile

i make breads for 4-H...that's what i'm doing tomorrow. it helps get your anger out, and it's excercise. the fair is sunday-wednesday...i show goats, chickens, ducks, and i do photography, shopping projects, i decopauged (how is that spelled?) three boxes with black and silver tissue paper, i'm going to enter garden veggies, and two really cool posters.
my school starts monday, august 18. i got my schedule yesterday. i'm 13 and i'm going to be a freshman. here's my schedule: Biology, band/choir, chapel, geometry, physical science, computer apps, english, religion, phys ed, and either chorale or art. i get done at 2:34, 3:37, or 3:41, depending on the day. i'm also doing volleyball. i'm going to be nonstop busy, or at least until vball is over. i can't wait to see all my friends and crushes.

It's weird, but I love making my own potato chips. You peel a potato, cut it into thin little slices, dip it in veggie oil, salt, and whatever flavors you want. then put the chips spread out on a plate in the microwave for 2 minutes. They're so good!

well, my friend's having this pool part next weekend, and i'm nervous.
i'm not fat, but my stomach's not completely toned. and there's ONE part about my body that i don't like, and it's like these 2 inches of flab at my lower stomach. and it like sticks out, sorta like a baby bump, ya know?
well, how do i get that gone by next saturday?

Potatoes really get crispy in the microwave?

kathygurl13 on 8/7/2008 8:53:44 PM

I like baking. Just yesterday night we made some spice cake with super-sweet butterscotch chips. The cake is almost GREASY and the butterscotch chips make it kind of sickening. My mom and have declared the recipe a failure. I can't believe it! I found a cake I didn't like.

girlnextdoor123 on 8/7/2008 8:55:39 PM

Hey smartie13! My mom used to be in 4-H in IL. when she was growing up. Her family always won best show rabbit, and my Aunt once got a prize for her preserves. Oh yeah, and are your veggies crisp, colorful, nicely sized, and plentiful? I hope you do well, best of luck!

kathygurl13 on 8/7/2008 8:58:25 PM

I love cooking yummy meals a lot, especially if I make my healthy alternatives of not so healthy foods. Like I made a meat loaf a few days ago that used one pound ground turkey, 1 1/2 cup homemade whole-wheat bread crumbs, 7 oz. bag of boiled pinto beans, 1 onion, 2 eggs, and plenty of pepper. It was dee-lish with some fresh blended tomatoes on top. I served it with broccoli and canalope, but it tastes good with baby brussel sprouts too.

kathygurl13 on 8/7/2008 9:06:57 PM

I love baking and cooking (and eating) too, so if anybody has any good recipes I'd love to try them!!! Oh yeah, and ♥music addict?? Umm... idk if I'm supposed to reply to this, but... I have a similar problem and honestly theres not much you can do in such a short time, and I don't know if this really works, but when I do just a couple of simple ab exercises I feel a lot better about myself and that's really all you need!! Oh yea and drink lots of water the day before!!

dairyqueen87 on 8/7/2008 10:57:05 PM

i_rock_big_socks!!!!! on 8/7/2008 11:24:43 PM

I <3 baking! It is my favorite thing to do when I'm super bored! I love making cakes, bread, and especially cookies all from scratch! Not to toot my own horn, but my cookies are the bomb! And i love making apple cake! It is perfect for fall because it has cinnamon, apples, and some other stuff, but it smell amazing when it is baking and leaves the whole house smelling great for the rest of the day. I always make it with my grandma. She got it from her mom. It is an old family recipe! Yummy!!

i just recently hung out with one of my guy friends i haven't seen in a while. We have been friends since we were practily born, and i think i am getting the feeling i am starting to like him. we live about 20 min, away. but the thing is my mom grew up with his aunt, and his family seems like mine. i think he likes me too, but should i wait and tell him, or do you think i shouldn't tell him at all. ORRR... should i jus forget about it?? please help?
you guys are great Laughing

Hey Girl, If you think you are both into each other try spending more time together and see how it goes from there..also try asking if he wants a relationship or is liking anyone these days, so you can get a better idea if you should tell him you like him right away or wait a little longer. *Cara T*

Wow! That sounds like a ton of fun!
My brother has found a real love of cooking. He loves it. He got so excited when Mom asked him if he wanted to cook while we went camping next weekend. He's good to. I am really glad he has found something he really enjoys.
