TUESDAY Q-DAY: Hit The Pavement

I really want to start running! But have no clue how to start. I wanna run around my block, but I feel kinda embarrassed doin' that. Any ideas?

Thx, xoxo
nana0472

Hey Nana0472,

“Running is one of the most effective exercises,” says trainer Andrea Partland. But before you hit the pavement, here’s what you gotta do.

Get running sneakers. Shoes that are made for running are key for keeping your bod protected from the impact.

Build up strength. Having strength in the lower half of your bod is essential for running. Doing squats and lunges will help get you ready.

Get out there! Start by running for 20 minutes. Don’t be afraid to walk if you have to…just get jogging when you feel ready again.

If you feel embarrassed running in your neighborhood, head over to a local track. Or, ask your BFF to join you. But, remember, tonsa people run near their houses, so as long as you’re safe (aka, running when it’s light out) give it a shot. Try running every other day and then up your time when you feel ready. Also, you may wanna consider joining your school’s cross-country team!

I bought a pair of Nike running shoes and they are super awesome! My dad flipped out because we own this dorky shoe store for people with foot problems and now he always wants us to get "good" shoes instead of "shoes like wash cloths". No idea what the wash cloth thing is supposed to mean.... Yeah he asked me why I got them and I said "to go running" and he was like "Your going running in those?!?!?" It was just weird. I mean they are RUNNING SHOES!!! Hahaha. And athletes use Nike right?

sk8rgirl on 8/5/2008 6:41:17 PM

I hate having to run in a circle.

i think running is soooooo boring! and for 20 min?! i would prefer to do something fun for longer periods of time. any ideas?
if i shoot hoops for like 30 min or just play basketball for a long time does that have the same effect?

fashionista8613 on 8/5/2008 8:10:34 PM

i hate running!!! i ride my bike ALL THE TIME tho

luv2shop112 on 8/5/2008 8:10:53 PM

Running is really boring. Is there anything else cardio that you recommend that I can do instead?

fashionista8613 on 8/5/2008 8:12:36 PM

i have this problem....

vollin_bballin_soccerchick on 8/5/2008 8:56:09 PM

megabegabyte on 8/5/2008 9:11:54 PM

i love to run! its just i dont when there is no point or something to entertain me. i cant ask a FRIEND CUZ they dont support

snowgirl722 on 8/5/2008 9:17:01 PM

I used to think running was boring when I did track, but now I do cross country with my high school. Running on trails is so much more fun than running on a track. Plus...dirt trails are better for you than pavement!

tropicalsnow1 on 8/5/2008 10:19:43 PM

Hey, I also met a lot of new friends doing cross country!

tropicalsnow1 on 8/5/2008 10:20:26 PM

i'm going out for the volleyball team and i was thinking of going out 4 track but i used to hate running when i was a little kid but now i like running. I don't know what i should do! HELP ME PLZ! <3

Tayburr112 on 8/5/2008 10:33:21 PM

***hey there, mod!***
this is so weird that i saw this question today because today, i just started running. im running track and cross country at school for the 2nd time, and this year they're making us run 2-3 miles a day. so my dad showed me how far to run around the neighborhood to run a mile, and i started doing this twice a day. should i start a little smaller? i feel a little tired afterwards, but i drink a lot of water. is this safe? thanks!

smiley-sarah on 8/5/2008 10:56:38 PM

hey chicas-- i just wanted to say that if running is boring to you, i had the same prob! but now, i sort of use running to think. while i run i just have a little quiet thinking time where i sort of talk to myself (lol) about friendship problems and what i can do to solve them and about what i need to accomplish that day and stuff like that. it sounds a little weird, but it made running more enjoyable!

smiley-sarah on 8/5/2008 11:01:11 PM

Hey Girls,
I got running all the time. But I'm not embarresed. My neighbors probably think that I'm a good and dedicated runner. I'm out there everyday working my hardest and it shows. Be proud that your a tough girl who doesn't give up with this. Everyone will see the confidence you have when you hit the track with you friends and are totally in shape!

dancerwithCRUSH on 8/5/2008 11:13:55 PM

MODERATOR,
When I got work out it's always an old t-shirt with some of my school gym short. So I was wondering where I can get cute cloths to work out in?

dancerwithCRUSH on 8/5/2008 11:15:16 PM

hey, luv2shop112!

Orrea_Luvs_Shoes (and boys and smileys and) on 8/5/2008 11:36:07 PM

i have no problem of finding a place to run. i live near an academy thats not huge, but pretty big. TONS of people run around it and no one cares so i just go run too! lol. its dirt so no hard pavement.

Orrea_Luvs_Shoes (and boys and smileys and) on 8/5/2008 11:37:44 PM

hey smiley-sarah! i ALWAYS think bout stuff! when i run at least... lol. i listen to music too, which makes it go by faster 4 some reason... lol. its really good 2 relieve stress cuz u think bout stuff and are all level headed on what to do next.

Orrea_Luvs_Shoes (and boys and smileys and) on 8/5/2008 11:39:46 PM

like OMG!!! today i was running with my dog this morning and i was picking up the pace and she was still behind me and i tripped and fell...my hand got a little cut but i got right back up,kept running, and acted like it never happened...i was like really close to home too so that was good .

I run, but I do it on the treadmill or wii fit
Laughing
I also run with my dog, bike and strength train
my goal is to one day be as toned as Jillian Micheals

typomaster on 8/6/2008 1:55:48 PM

Hey MOD!?
I recently started using your work-out exercises because I need to get ready for daily gym class (a bore but it's mandatory). Well, I messed around with them a lot until I got it right, but my legs started killing me today! It's even hard to walk right! I can really just ignore the pain because I'm getting used to it, but is this a bad sign? Should I stop doing the exercises???? Please help me before I injure myself!

girlnextdoor123 on 8/6/2008 2:48:15 PM

I don't like running. It's kind of embarrassing to run down the block when everybody abandons the rules of manners and stares at you like you're from Mars (that's what they do on my block). So I run on my parents' eliptical trainer, but shhh! They don't know! Except for I'm not a good runner and my feet are killing me 'cause I do it barefoot, it works pretty well.

girlnextdoor123 on 8/6/2008 2:53:39 PM

girlnextdoor123
exercising is SUPPOSED to hurt. if you dont feel the burn then u rnt donig it right. sometimes that means it will hurt the next day-but dont worry it will stop and then u will be STRONGER! just keep on exercising!

fashionista8613 on 8/6/2008 8:10:07 PM

oh and for the record i like running to but not just plain running becuz it so incredibly boring!

fashionista8613 on 8/6/2008 8:10:55 PM

MOD If tonight I start doing crunches every night, then by Aug. 20, would I start to see some improvement in my abdominals? Oh, and I also am already eating healthy. I have lost 5 pounds!

Congrats on losing 5pounds!  About the crunches, it depends on how many crunches you do.  And it might take some time to acutally see the improvement. -lauren

blondie_cutie_smartie on 8/6/2008 10:48:15 PM

Ouch!!! I fell off a horse yesterday. I was at my riding lesson and my heel dug into its stomach and it went really fast which threw me off. I screamed when I fell off, which you're not supposed to do. It almost trampled me.

pinkluvr185 on 8/6/2008 11:17:20 PM

i wish i saw this article earlier, i LOVE running! i do track and cross country and will do indoor track this winter. i prefer cross country cuz i love running longer distances and on trails!

label-free♥ on 8/7/2008 1:20:46 AM

i LOVE to run, the only problem is
1.my sneakers are skater shoes, not running shoes Tong
2. there are a lot of dogs in my neighborhood...once a dog chased me down a hill while i was riding my bike, and i still have a huge fear of that, because i was taking a walk, and then another dog started barking at me and coming closer. that time i didnt scream though Tong

yea so i love running but im afraid to...maybe i could run when im over at my bff's house w/ her?

flip-flop_diva on 8/7/2008 11:36:19 AM

i don't like to run by myself, but i joined my cross country team and we've been working out all summer. it's super fun (we have parties, trips, and pasta dinners to carb load before meets) and i'm getting in great shape. it's a really good motivator to have a team that's counting on you to run!

BlondeBeachBabe on 8/7/2008 12:37:51 PM

MOD
Last night I did 75 crunches. It took me a while (like 4 minutes) cuz about every 15 crunches I had to stop and rest for awhile. If I did this every night, do you think I would see some improvement?

Hey girly! You probably would have to do a lot of them consistantly to see results, but keep going and you should see some change if you do them for a while. --Sammi

blondie_cutie_smartie on 8/7/2008 2:25:27 PM

i run a mile every night... its a good idea tht when u first start to run a little then take a break, run a little take a break... ect.
now its easy and you stay really fit and in shape

rachieboo on 8/7/2008 5:01:06 PM

Hey chiquitos, it's me smiley-sarah again and I just wanted to ssay that another way to make running more fun is to take your fabulous pooch! it's a great way to get your puppy up and running too!

smiley-sarah on 8/8/2008 11:40:02 AM

MOD
How long do you think it would take for me to see some improvement doing 75 crunches/night?

Prob a couple of weeks girl! *Cara T*

blondie_cutie_smartie on 8/8/2008 2:28:17 PM

heyyyyyy i have tht same prob.....my bro goes on a run but he goes 4 miles and i dont wanna do dat

reesezcup9 on 8/8/2008 4:48:50 PM

prettypirate101 on 8/8/2008 7:58:48 PM

cross country is fun! you get to run with people your own age, plus you learn stretches and running tips! lots of work, but sooooooo worth it!!!

iheartsoccer101 on 8/9/2008 12:38:41 AM

Cross Country is way better in my opinion. I also like track but,Im not a person who loves running in circles and a change in scenery is great too. Anyway Cross Country starts tomarrow and I'm so excited. It's definitly a sport worth trying out!!!
