Blocked from Browsin'

It seems like my parents put locks on everything. The TV, the computer, etc. I know that they don’t want me exposed to certain things, but it really gets annoying when a blank screen says, “This channel is blocked,” or, “You need a password to view this channel.”

I tried to tell them that I won’t do anything bad, but it seems like they don’t care. I’m 11 years old. What can I do to get my parents to loosen up a bit? I’m not asking that they unlock everything; just to be reasonable.

Hey there, girly. Sorry to hear about the way frustrating sitch. My parents used to have the computer set on a “teen user” setting where it would sometimes even block sites I needed for school. I know it’s super annoying, but with a little work, things will get better.

When I tried to get on completely appropriate sites and the computer blocked them, I would ask my parents to give me access to that site. Showing them helped them figure out it was time to end the parental blocks. Do the same with your ’rents. Once they realize all the blocks are a bit excessive, they’ll be more likely to reconsider.

Freedom isn’t something to be dished out. You’ve gotta earn it, girl! Instead of just telling mom and pops you’re responsible, show ‘em! If you do well in school, stay organized, help out and clean up without having to be asked, and they’ll def notice you’ve grown up.

Even though you’ve talked to mom and dad before, it’s time to chat again. Instead of venting your frustration, sit your parents down to work something out so you can ALL be happy. Stay cool and collected and show that you’re willing to compromise by proposing new ideas they may be a bit happier with. Maybe they can remove the block on some channels and sites and leave the block on others. No matter what you decide, be sure to work it out together.

Best of luck!
