Girl Talk: STOP Walking All Over Me!

walking.jpg

I’m so sick of people making fun of me and using me! People make fun of me for every little thing I do! And guys don't go out with me, but they'll use me for bets and stuff! I'm really quiet and almost never talk. I feel depressed all the time. I pretty much go home at the end of the day and cry about everything that happened that day. I hate being so sad all the time and I want to be happy! My mom won't let me see a counselor because she doesn’t think I need one. What should I do?'

Hey sk8xoxo94,
I know how you feel. When I was in middle school, I was shy and smart and people used me just to copy answers, but would then make fun of me and my friends. Because I was so shy and had low self-esteem, I let them copy off of me and didn’t say no to give them even more reason to make fun of me – it was the only way I knew to get them to “like” me. But really all I was essentially doing was letting them walk all over me.
Speak up, babe! Because you’re so quiet, people will assume they can just walk all over you and do what they want. And if you never talk to them, they’ll never get a chance to get to know you and see what a great person you really are. If you keep a smile on your face, you’ll seem more friendly and approachable. If you show some confidence and try to be a little more outgoing, you just might make some friends, or at least gain some respect so they don’t pick on you as much.

When it comes down to it, if you really feel like you need to talk to a counselor, even if your mom doesn’t want you to, just go see the guidance counselor at school. Last I checked, you don’t need parental permission to talk to someone at school. And it’s not necessarily that you need “help” but more that you just need someone to talk to about your feelings and get advice from.
