Shadow Someone

Not so sure you’re cut out for crustless grilled cheese sammies and endless rounds of "Sorry"?  Tag along with an older sis or your BFF on her next sitting gig. Clear it with the family first—some parents get weird when babysitters bring friends (even for official business).  Once on the job, pay attention to how your friend handles everything, like meals, playtime, bedtime, and, um, diaper changes.  Phew!

After a few visits—preferably one during the day and one in the evening—you should know if sitting is your thing. If it is, ask a neighborhood mom if you can spend a Saturday being her helper. While she’s home, help with chores, play with kids, make lunch and just generally be her assistant. Learn where the paper towels are and if the kids are allowed to watch certain shows. Oh, and don’t expect any money for the test drive.
