#Girlpower: Women who made history on election night

"To all the little girls watching, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful & deserving of every chance & opportunity in the world." That's what Hilary Clinton reminded us in her concession speech early Wednesday morning. And while we may have to wait another four (or more) years before a woman runs the White House, it doesn't mean we haven't been making incredible progress towards closing the gender gap. Check out some of the women who started to crack the glass ceiling in politics on election night:

Kamala Harris
The California Attorney General was elected the first female black senator of California. Her reform policies and role in the marriage equality fight make her a powerful girl boss.

Ilhan Omar
Now the country's first Somali-American legislator (she will represent Minnesota in the House), Mrs. Omar has come a long way since she and her family lived in a refugee camp after fleeing the dangerous Somali civil war when she was eight years old.

Catherine Cortez Masto
Mrs. Masto secured her spot as the first Latina senator on Tuesday night in Nevada. Her main cause? To represent all of the young girls out there who want a better world. She said, "It’s not my voice I’m taking to Washington, it’s all of yours."

Stephanie Murphy
Meet the first Vietnamese-American elected to Congress who came to the country after being rescued at sea by the U.S. Navy while she and her family were escaping Vietnam. She was inspired to run for office by the June shooting at Pulse nightclub in her home state and is excited to help young girls become successful businesswomen.

Kate Brown
The newest Oregon head of state is the first openly LGBT governor in the U.S. When she was originally outed as being bisexual, Ms. Brown held her head high with pride and grace saying she is happy to be a role model for others and that, "you can't be what you can't see."

Who is your favorite female role model? Let us know in the comments!
