Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, my neighbor wants to be my friend but she's super mean"

Dear Carol,
There's a girl in my neighborhood who is always mean to me, but afterward, she wants to be freinds. I tell her that I don't want to be friends with someone who calls me fat and other names. She'll be nice for a little while, then becomes mean again, and it all starts over.
—My Friend Is Mean

Dear My Friend Is Mean,
Who needs unfriendly friends? Mean girls really are lame, aren't they? Fortunately, most outgrow the stinging queen-bee behavior and come to realize that instead of being hot and cold, it's better to be warm. Rather than telling her you don't want to be friends, quietly start hanging out with kinder girls. Can you invite someone else to come watch a movie or go swimming with you? Focus on girls who are fun and help you feel good about yourself. You don't have to avoid your neighbor forever, but remind yourself that her prickliness is her problem, not yours.
