LIFE

Dear Carol

My mom read my diary without permission!

I have a big problem. My mom went through my diary and didn’t ask. I don’t want her going through my stuff. Help!

Dear Privacy Problem,
I don’t blame you for being upset. Keeping a diary is a great way to express thoughts and find your voice, and a diary should be for the writer’s eyes only. Here are three suggestions: 1) Hide your diary. 2) Be more open with your mom so she doesn’t feel she has to pry to learn more about your life. 3) Tell your mom she has raised you well and can trust you without invading your privacy. When a daughter gets into trouble, parents (understandably) feel more justified being nosey.
