LIFE

Dear Carol

Are you completely misunderstood by mom? Here's how to deal

Dear Carol,
My mom and I are like enemies. One day when we were yelling, she told me I’ll only appreciate her when she’s gone! I’m trying to be her friend, but she doesn’t get me. I’m thinking of running away with a friend. Should I?
–Misunderstood

Dear Misunderstood,
No! Running away is dangerous. If you need space, spend a weekend at a friend’s house. If you need to talk, call a hotline like the Kids' Crisis Line at 877-KIDS-400. Your mom probably feels frustrated too. Next time she’s mean, don’t yell back. Stay reasonable and say, “I see your point. Let’s work this out.” It might also help to write your mom a note telling her you love her and hope you can both work to get along.
