LIFE

Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, I want to spend more quality time with my dad"

Dear Carol,
Ever since my dad got a girlfriend, they both think I'm lying about everything. I tried to tell my dad I don't like his girlfriend, but he didn't like it.
—My Father Has a Girlfriend

Dear My Father Has a Girlfriend,
I'm sorry things are so difficult. But if you had a BF, you wouldn't want anyone telling your dad to say, "I don't like your boyfriend." So instead of, "I don't like your girlfriend," try, "I wish your girlfriend and I got along better." Any ideas? Or "Dad, can we take a walk or do something just us? That would mean a lot to me." If it ever is just the two of you, don't gripe about her. Use the time to talk about classes, activities, goals and concerns. Your dad's GF should realize he's a package deal—he comes with a wonderful daughter. Try to make an effort to be civil, respectful and trustworthy. Relationships are a two-way street: You get what you give.
