Six real girls spill on how they met their BFFs

Whether you’ve known your BFF since kindergarten or just met them this year, every friendship is a special and awesome one. Some people meet their BFFs at school, while others bond over fave ice cream flavors—some even began as enemies. Check out how these real girls found their BFFs!

1. “I met my best friend Sarah in choir back in middle school. At first, I thought she was so annoying—always jumping around on people and talking way too loudly. But once I got to know her and found out how much we actually had in common, I started to see these things more as what makes her special, rather than as something that’s a pain.” —Alexis, 18

2. “I actually met my best friend online. My parents always said I shouldn’t talk to people online that I didn’t know, but playing my games is always more fun with other people. We started talking and playing together online, and after not too long, our parents took us to meet in person! It was crazy to see her in real life, and so exciting because now we can really act how best friends do.” —Morgan, 16

3. “Sammy and I became BFFs in elementary school because both of us were awful at sports, and so we always got picked last for everything in gym. One day, the class was playing baseball and both of us were in what I think is called the outfield. We started talking instead of playing and no one even noticed! So we started sneaking off every gym class to talk and hang out instead—we were so bad at sports, no one even noticed we weren’t there to mess things up!” —Autumn, 17

4. “Freshman year of high school, my now BFF and I had mega crushes on the same guy. We both thought we deserved to be with him more, so finally one day we asked him who he wanted to be with. He looked at us really weird and said that he already had a girlfriend, so he didn’t want to date either of us. That didn’t feel good, but it helped me and Katie bond! Now we have a friendship rule not to ever date or like the same boys again—we like our friendship too much to ruin it now!” —Ally, 16

5. “Our moms grew up together and are still BFFs to this day. They had us only a few months apart, so we were practically destined to become best friends too. It’s so great that we’re all connected because it makes it so much easier to see each other all the time!” —Courtney, 15

6. “I actually just met my BFFs less than a year ago. I just moved to college across the country from my hometown back in September, and the girls on my floor have literally been the best. It’s so cheesy to say that I’ll be friends for life with my college girls, but it’s definitely true. Living in the dorms and on your own for the first time is an experience that can really help people bond!” —Emma, 19
