Get the heads up on surfing with Vanina Walsh

Vanina Walsh is making a splash in the surfing world.  When this fourteen-year-old surfer isn’t adding trophies to her staggering collection of awards (70 in total), she’s modeling for Roxy and designing surfboard graphics.  Wowza!  We got hold of this wonder wahine when she wasn’t catchin’ some waves to ask her about staying toned on the beach.
GL: How do you stay fit out of the water?

Vanina: When I’m not surfing I like to paddle my race stand-up paddle board and run in the evenings on a golf course near by my house. I also like to skate on my Kahuna Big Stick Skateboard around my neighborhood. It’s like paddle surfing on land! Sometimes I go body surfing at the North Shore with my friends. I think it is important to find things to keep you active when you can.

GL: So, how do you conquer a fear of big waves?

VW: I watch the waves for 15 to 20 minutes before I go out to surf. If I don’t feel comfortable, I simply don’t go out. It is important to know your limits. Somebody once told me, to respect the ocean, not fear it. Big wave surfer, Bobby Friedman, worked with me to show me how to relax when getting hit by big waves. I guess spending so much time in the ocean you just become comfortable in the water and waves.

GL: Good advice! What are your favorite healthy foods?

VW: My favorite healthy food to eat is Tambor Acai with honey, fresh bananas, strawberries and granola! I eat it several times a week after surfing. I almost always drink water and I don’t drink sodas or eat too many fried foods. I like salads and fresh fruit but I do love my Reeses Peanut Butter Cups!

GL: Anything you always wear when you’re in the water?

VW: A must have for me in the water or out of the water are my RumbaTime watches! They are smooth, bright and water-resistant. They are great because they go with everything!
