Drink this, not that: Holiday sips edition

We can’t resist ordering up our favorite pipin’ hot sips from corner cafes. But have you ever thought about exactly what’s in that beverage you’re sipping? Neither have we—‘til now. While some of the nutrition labels can give ya sticker shock, there are easy ways to cut out the bad stuff. Go ahead, girlie, order up!

Tell us: What is your favorite holiday drink, babes?

    Dunkin’ Donuts’ Gingerbread Latte

Wanna add a dash of spice to your season? We’re digging this creamy concoction. Have ‘em make it with skim milk to shave off 50 calories and three-quarters of the fat and drink up, darlin’!

  • drinks-mcd.jpg

    McDonald’s McCafé Peppermint Mocha

This limited edition drink is made with steamed milk, which packs a major protein punch—a definite plus for warding off mid-afternoon snooze seshes. But when ya order it straight up, it’s loaded with fat and sugar…not what we’re looking for in a snack, right? Opt for nonfat milk instead of whole milk and ditch the gratuitous heap of whipped cream and drizzle of chocolate sauce to get your small down to 160 calories, half a gram of fat and 29g of sugar.

    Starbucks’ Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

Not a coffee drinker? You’re so not alone! Sip Starbucks’ holiday hot chocolate. It’s loaded up with steamed milk (opt for nonfat or 2%), mocha sauce, toffee and vanilla syrup and a sprinkle of raw sugar and sea salt. A small clocks in at 160 calories with minimal fat and sodium and 20 percent of your daily recommended amount of calcium.

    Caribou Coffee’s Apple Blast

We can’t resist the scent of apple cider, and this is one of our faves. Sip away on a “short” and pass on the whipped cream for a drink that’s light on calories. It does pack on the sugar, so remember: it’s a treat, not one of your five a day!

  • drinks-dq.jpg

Dairy Queen’s Candy Cane Chill Royal Shake

Grab a friend or two and order this frosty-fab shake from DQ. Vanilla soft serve is swirled with milk, pieces of candy cane and chocolate chunks. Um, yum. You def want to grab a few straws and share this one, though, since there is more than one—a small packs 550 calories and 19 grams of fat. Still, it’s got almost half of your calcium for the day, and a decent amount of iron, vitamin A and protein, to boot. Not too shabby!

  • drinks-jamba.jpg

    Jamba Juice’s Eggnog Jubilee Smoothie

Order this baby light for all the spicy holiday goodness with a third fewer calories and absolutely no fat plus 40-percent of your recommended daily vitamin A. Our only question? Who’s treating?!
