Eat Right

This just in: Sugar makes you stupid

We’ve heard all about the evils of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). It’s bad for your waistline, bad for your insides and now, researchers report, it’s bad for your brain, too.

Forbes.com reports that an experiment conducted by UCLA scientists showed that giving rats a fructose solution in place of regular drinking water were much slower at completing a maze than mice that didn’t consume the fructose. The fructose interfered with the brain cells’ ability to “talk” to one another, meaning that they couldn’t think quickly or clearly. HFCS could cause your memory and recall abilities to tank, too, just like the rats’. Yikes!

But there is good news. The scientists also gave one group of rats a diet rich on omega-3 fatty acids. These rats found their way through the maze quickly. The researchers have also concluded that an omega-3-heavy diet can counteract the mind-numbing effects of a diet high in HFCS.

Your best bet for pre-finals food? Cut out the highly processed, packaged goodies and munch on all-natural sweets instead, like fresh berries. Yum!
