5 ways mindfulness will change your life

You’re a busy girl with a million things on your mind, and sometimes, life can feel really overwhelming! Between overthinking the past or worrying about the future, it can be difficult to remember to focus on the present. But by practicing mindfulness, the act of paying attention to each moment as it’s happening, you can change your life. Skeptical? Read on for a breakdown of how mindfulness works.

1. You learn how to put things into perspective

Sometimes you get so wrapped up in your head, you think every single decision is going to affect your life forever. When you feel that way, try to remember that no single moment will determine your fate forever. It’s okay if you feel sad, angry or anxious at times, as all are completely natural feelings. Practicing mindfulness won’t magically banish all sad or angry thoughts, instead, you’ll learn to embrace them and let yourself feel what you need to.

2. You become more grateful

Every moment is a once in a lifetime opportunity—once it passes, it will not come again. So take time to be thankful for the unique life you’re living and smile at the small things. Whether you’re doubled over in laughter over a LOL-worthy cat video, experiencing your first kiss or just taking an afternoon hike with your BFFs, take time to appreciate just how special that moment is. Tip: keeping a gratitude journal is an A+ way to do this and boost your mood!

3. You understand how to let things go

That blowout fight with your mom? That embarrassing fall you took in front of your crush? These are both things that will pass. You always have the option to handle situations with grace and maturity, regardless of the way others are acting. The only person you have control over is yourself. Realizing that can help you let go of things that are out of your hands and is key to relieving stress.

4. You become more self-aware

Mindfulness requires you to tune in and ask yourself how you’re feeling without labeling anything as “right” or “wrong.” Do a little check-in with yourself and notice any emotions or sensations you're experiencing. Breathe deeply. Take a break and meditate for five minutes. Indulge in some chocolate. If something feels off, make sure to treat yourself with respect. Give your body and mind the TLC they deserve!

5. You channel positive energy

If you’re a grateful gal with a go-with-the-flow attitude and a whole lot of love for the world, you’re probably going to be projecting some pretty positive vibes! Your sunny outlook can not only make you feel great about life, but also help others feel the effects of your happiness, too. You’re still going to have highs and lows—that’s just part of being human—but by being mindful, you’ll be able to tackle life’s challenges with an open mind and thankful heart.
