Your complete guide to New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion week kicked off just yesterday, and we're ready to check out all the awesome fashion inspo to come. Not sure what Fashion week is or how you can keep up? We've got your complete guide here. Check it out.

How did New York Fashion Week begin?

According to Time, before the first New York Fashion Week, America wasn’t the place to go for style inspiration. Instead, Paris was the city to go for the scoop on all things clothing. In 1943, Eleanor Lambert, a leading fashion publicist, changed the game. During that year, France was preoccupied fighting in World War II. Lambert saw this as a chance to finally have America find its place in the world of fashion. She put together an event called Press Week, which showcased American designers.

What is New York Fashion Week (NYFW) today?

A time when top designers have presentations and runway shows to introduce their upcoming collections. While runway shows consist of models strutting down the walkway, Teen Vogue explains that presentations take the form of models wearing the clothes and posing together in a scene while guests have the ability to get up and personal with the clothes. Sometimes designers decide to not have a runway show or presentation but rather invite guests to their showroom for a peek at their upcoming looks.

When is New York Fashion Week?

As Teen Vogue reported, NYFW happens two times a year: in September and in February. February showcases the looks for Fall and Winter and September showcases the looks for Spring and Summer. This upcoming fashion week will be held from September 10-17, 2015.

Does Fashion Week happen in other countries?

Yes, fashion week also takes place in Paris, Milan and London.

How does what you see in the shows translate to your outfit of the day?

The best way to think about these runway shows and presentations is to see them as the chance for the designer to have all of their creativity expressed. The looks might be over dramatized and extra elaborate compared to what will actually be sold in the stores. So instead of looking for an exact outfit to copy, keep your eye out for general themes and trends that could be translated into your own wardrobe.

Can I go to Fashion Week?

All who attend the shows and presentations of fashion week must have received an invitation; however, you can totally watch the shows at home in your PJs through the live streaming feature. Check it out here.
