Out with the old! 7 steps to clean your closet for 2013

What better way to cleanse for the New Year than to go through your closet? If you’re sick of not being able to find anything to wear (much less your left riding boot…), we’ve got 7 tips on how to successfully reframe and reorganize your life closet (which might as well be your life). Don’t think you can face your monster closet alone? Invite over a few girlfriends to help you stay focused and give you advice.

Step 1: First things first, have a few trash bags handy for separating your clothes. You are going to want to start three piles: “keep,” “give away,” and “toss.”

Step 2: The best thing to do is to go through each clothing type one item at a time. Start simple with your shoes, and then move on to pants, sweater, tops, etc. The more organized you are going through your closet, the better you’ll be at the end when you are putting it all away.

Step 3: As you think about each piece, consider whether or not you have worn it in the last year. If the answer is no, then you should place it in your give away pile: Chances are slim that you’ll ever actually put it on. Plus, another girl out there may be very thankful for your donation. If an item of clothing is ripped, stained or holey, then you’re better off just tossing it.

Step 4: Ask questions. When considering something you want to keep, think about how often you wear it, ways you can restyle that piece, and whether or not it still fits. The best way to judge is to try everything on! It may seem like a hassle, but it is the best way to see how each piece of clothing fits.

Step 5: Hold on to the classics! Although you may be tired of your little black dress and a zillion plain white tees, it might be a good idea to keep them. Pieces that never go out of style are great to have in your closet because you resort to wearing them year after year.

Step 6: After you have gone through your entire closet, really consider how you want to put all of your clothes away. You could organize by season, color, or category—maybe even a combination of all three! You may also want to reconsider which things you hang up and which things you fold. Pick the format that is most logical for you and the space you’re working with.

Hint: We hang up our blouses, skirts, dresses, nice pants and jackets, fold our tees, tanks and sweaters, and gently roll or fold our jeans.

Step 7: Now you are ready for a little shopping spree! The fun really begins when you find out what you need to buy for the next season. After going through everything, you will be able to see what you actually need, which means less time spent buying unnecessary garments and more time spent shopping for great must-haves for your wardrobe this season. Success!
