How to handle financial differences in a relationship

No one wants money to be a factor in a relationship, but when you and your special someone have financial differences, it can lead to some awkward and uncomfortable scenarios. If you’re a saver and your bae is a spender (or vice versa), things like buying gifts and splitting dinner bills become a little more complicated. We don’t want you to stress out over moola because, after all, money can’t buy happiness! So here are our best tips for discussing money with your significant other and handling financial differences like a #boss.

Decide if you're a spender or a saver

One of the best things about dating is you learn to love and understand people from all different backgrounds. So when you discover that your beau has more or less money than you do, keep an open mind, be flexible and definitely communicate your sitch to your sweetie whenever differences arise. If you take pride in being frugal, tell your boyfriend or girlfriend that you’re trying to save money and VIP concert tickets aren't in your budget. On the other hand, if you like receive a monthly allowance and like spending money, be accepting if your bae can’t afford to go out every Friday night.

Gift like a pro

To avoid awkwardness when giving gifts, we suggest setting a price limit or sticking to homemade/DIY gifts during birthdays or holidays. That way you both are on the same level when searching for the perf present! If you need ideas, a jar filled with reasons why you love your beau, a photo album or homemade cupcakes are all awesome and affordable options. However, if your sweetie is always buying you *super* expensive presents, you can say something like, "I really appreciate your thoughtful gifts, but they're just a little too much. All I really want is to spend time with you."

Don't break the bank for a date

Whether you like to save or spend, we recommend choosing dates that won’t break the bank. Instead of going to the movie theater, rent a free flick from the local library, make a fresh batch of popcorn at home and bake some brownies. Hit the trails for an afternoon hike or go stargazing at your favorite park. Every once in a while, you two may want to use your savings and go on a dinner date, which we’re all for—after all, you deserve to treat yourselves. When the bill comes around, going splitsies is your best bet. In relationships, sharing definitely equals caring!
