Week 42: Make Halloween Healthy

Trick-or-treating doesn’t have to be about packing that pumpkin full of candy. This year, make Halloween extra sweet…by going door-to-door for charity. Check out youth.unicefusa.org for deets on collecting moolah for kids who need it. Or, let your neighbors know you’ll be trick-or-treating for canned goods to give to a local shelter. Giving back will give ya feel-good vibes—much better than a sugar rush.

EDITOR'S BLOG: Is candy corn a food group?

Fall is my fave season. It’s perfect for outdoor activities, like hiking, biking (I just got a new bike, btw, more on that later!) and apple-picking. The air is super-crisp and I can wear sweaters and scarves all the time. Plus, it’s my b-day month (I was born the day before Halloween). Which leads me to my current dilemma....

How can I avoid all this candy corn? Candy bowls always frighten me. On one hand, it seems easy to avoid (just don’t take it!). But I normally fall into the other category...I’ll just have one. And then another. And then.... Ugh. Am I the only one who falls into this sticky, trick o’ treat trap?

Since I’m a pretty healthy eater, having the occasional sweet won’t ruin my vibe. The prob? I’ll eat candy corn (and those nasty candy pumpkins) even though I don’t like them. WHY?

This year, I’m gonna attack the issue from a different angle: With my chompers. Instead of reasoning “This sugar is empty calories and isn’t gonna fuel your body,” (which hasn’t worked in the past), I’m gonna think “Seriously, you only get one set of teeth. Do you wanna wreck them with THIS?” It’s time to bust out the floss.

Healthy Hearts,
Katie A.

Week 41: Go French

Studies have shown that even though the French are known for eating rich foods, they remain healthy. How? They know to put the fork and knife down when they are full. Yes, no one wants to waste food, but the Clean Plate Club concept is one of the reasons why Americans are among the most overweight people in the world.

EDITOR'S BLOG: I can see the finish line…

Sorta. I’m still training for the half-marathon. I trotted 11 miles for my Sunday long run. But I definitely have more work to do before the race. Though, as a friend of my family said the other night, “Shouldn’t you be done training by now?” Eek, good call. It’s in nine days!

So, here’s what I’m pondering this week: How can I balance my workouts and life, so that I’m perfectly prepped? What do you girls do when you have a big game/tryout/competition coming up?

My first thought was simple: Double sessions! “I know, I’ll run in the morning and then go to the gym after work.” But I don’t have a coach, and I’d end probably end up hurt. No, thanks. On to Plan B.

I’m gonna incorporate more back-to-basics, track-practice inspired moves into my workouts. Plyometrics (like squat and lunge jumps), push-ups and plenty of ab exercises should do the trick. I’ve gotta build strength, so my body can survive all those miles.

Oh, and I’m gonna get tons of sleep. Because, seriously, I’m zonked. G’nite!

Healthy Hearts,
Katie A.
