A new read for the band lover in all of us

From percussion to orchestra, it’s pretty safe to say that band has a spot in all of our hearts. Whether you’ve attempted the trumpet or became a pro on the clarinet, everyone has been involved in the activity in some way or another throughout the years. That’s why Michelle Schusterman’s new book I Heart Band hits a high note with pretty much everyone.

Holly Mead isn’t having the day she thought she’d have on her first day of seventh grade. After her pesky brother ruins her perfect back-to-school outfit, they’re almost late for school! Good thing she’s got band class to turn her day right side up—that is until she learns of the new director’s rules. Holly has always adored band, but now she’s nervous it is going to turn into something she loathes instead of loves. So she seeks out her BFF Julia for help. Only problem? Well, Julia has found herself a new bestie, which only increases Holly’s worrying.

Read on as Holly must learn to be able to balance her love for band with her schoolwork, friends and keeping with the new rules. Is there more to life than competing against one another? She better find out before Julia leaves her for a new pack of pals.

In this hilarious and heartwarming story about the life of a band-loving middle schooler, Schustermann shows the importance of friendship and how you sometimes have to sacrifice the things you love most for the sake of others.
